Pandemi yang Bisa Kita Cegah

JENEWA – Lebih dari satu dari lima orang Amerika yang dirawat di rumah sakit karena COVID-19 juga mengidap infeksi bakteri. Tanpa adanya antibiotik yang efektif, mereka yang cukup beruntung mengalahkan virus corona mungkin meninggal karena patogen yang sudah lama ditemukan.  

Sayangnya, tidak banyak rencana pengembangan antibiotik baru. Kurang dari 100 tahun setelah pengembangan penisilin, bakteri super yang resistan obat mungkin akan semakin sulit kita kalahkan.      

Bakteri super sudah menyebabkan beban berat pada sistem layanan kesehatan di seluruh dunia. Sekitar 700.000 orang di seluruh dunia meninggal setiap tahunnya karena resistensi obat antimikroba (AMR). Tanpa pengobatan yang baru dan lebih baik, angka kematian tersebut bisa meningkat hingga sepuluh juta orang pada tahun 2050.
