Vladimir Voinovich, perhaps the last of the great Soviet dissident writers, has died at age 85, having outlived the regime that sent him into exile. Voinovich fused Gogolian wit and Orwell’s nightmarish vision, with his The Life and Extraordinary Adventures of Private Ivan Chonkin lifting him into the pantheon of Russian novelists.
